Sam Hall Memorial Scholarship
For Mature Voices (ages 40 +) Establishing or Re-Establishing Career in Classical Voice
How to Apply:

ELIGIBILITY
These auditions are open to American citizens and residents, any gender, age 40 and older.
WHAT CONSTITUTES A START, OR RESTART?
The launch of a career begins when a professional contract is given at the conclusion of training, or education. Training can be with a private voice teacher and coaches. An emergence, or reemergence should have taken place no earlier than 2020.

1. An operatic aria from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Wagnerian, Verismo, or any genre within the 20th/21st Century. Any language. Please limit your selection to under 5 minutes, cuts permitted.
2. A contrasting operatic aria from another of the aforementioned eras/genres and a different language. OR, an ArtSong in a different language from the first video. An Oratorio aria from one of the aforementioned eras in a different style and language from the first video is also acceptable. Please limit your selection to under 5 minutes, cuts permitted.
3. Artist Statement: in addition to your submitted arias, we would also like you to answer a few questions on video as a separate artist statement (label your track on YouTube as Artist Statement). 1. What is your story? 2. Why (re)start now and when was your (re)start? 3. How would you use the funds if you are awarded the scholarship? Please limit your remarks to under 4 minutes total.

Although professional videos are preferred, good quality videos taken with your phone, or tablet are acceptable. Audio quality must be representative.

Make sure the video captures your upper torso, from the waist up, or your entire body. If you are using your own device, place your phone/tablet is at least a few feet away from you so we get as full effect as possible from your voice. Check your videos for distortion.

Videos should not be older than 2 years.

Place all videos on YouTube.com. Label each video track with the name of the aria and your name; example: Un bel di, Leontine Price
YOUR APPLICATION PACKAGE
Please put your name, age and place of residence in the subject line; example: Leontine Price, 95, Laurel, Mississippi.
When submitting your application package, please include a 1/2 page biography, your website & a recent headshot, or very good snapshot/selfie. Please include the names of your aria selections and the composers. Please also include your YouTube links.

IMPORTANT
*Please record your pieces off-book/memorized with a pianist. Singing with “karaoke-style” orchestral/piano prerecorded tracks will not be accepted and neither will other instrumental accompaniment.

ATTIRE
You can be in casual attire. We want you to be comfortable and do what you do best.
THE JUDGING PANEL
The panel is purposefully anonymous, but all are qualified, active professionals in the field of Opera and Classical music.
PHILOSOPHY
This prize is NOT about politics, or who you know; rather, it is about fantastic singing and commitment to the art form. We are more interested in potential than polish - strive for excellence, not perfection!
